First summer as a gallery owner!

I’ve just wrapped up my very first summer as a gallery owner, and I’m delighted with how it went. The space was warmly received by both tourists and locals, which has been such a joy to witness. Looking back, perhaps naming the gallery Brian Campbell Photography would have been clearer, as many visitors assumed I was simply hosting other artists’ work. They always got a pleasant surprise when I explained that every piece on the walls was my own and that I handle the full process from start to finish. I took great pride in providing context to my work, sharing the inspiration behind each photograph, and discussing the techniques I used to capture those moments. Each image carries a story, whether it’s the serene beauty of a sunrise over the mountains or the chaotic energy of a bustling street market. It has certainly been a learning process, not only in the art of photography but also in the art of connecting with people through my work. I already look forward to next summer, eager to reflect on what I’ve learned and how I can improve the gallery experience.

Now, much like the shift in seasons, I too move into a new rhythm after a busy summer. My time and energy flow back into creating, learning, and enjoying what I love most: photographing this incredible country we call home. With summer’s hustle behind me, I find joy in revisiting old projects, as well as embarking on new creative endeavors. This period allows me to experiment with different styles and techniques without the pressure of exhibition deadlines. It’s a time for personal reflection and growth, where I can delve deeper into the nuances of light and shadow or explore various subjects, from quiet landscapes to dynamic street photography.

Autumn brings its own magic. Later sunrises and earlier sunsets, along with the colder, harsher weather, create the drama and atmosphere I crave in my photography. For a few fleeting weeks, the lush green trees give way to vibrant yellows, oranges, and reds – a small window of opportunity to capture woodland scenes before the first winter storm strips the branches bare and color disappears for another half-year. Each day offers a new palette to work with, and I often find myself revisiting favorite locations to capture the transformation. The crisp air invigorates my senses, making each click of the shutter feel more potent. I cherish those early morning excursions where the fog gently blankets the landscape, lending an ethereal quality to my images.

As an ocean lover, this season is doubly exciting. Powerful swells arrive with the change in weather, sending me along the coastlines, camera in hand, in search of waves and Wild Atlantic energy. The ocean takes on a new character during autumn, with dramatic skies and tumultuous waters creating breathtaking scenes. I love capturing the contrast of the fierce waves crashing against the rugged cliffs, often with a backdrop of stunning sunsets. There’s a thrill in braving the elements, battling wind and rain to get that perfect shot. Each visit to the coast provides me with fresh inspiration and an opportunity to document nature’s raw beauty.

I never like to wish away time, but autumn always holds a special place for me. There’s a bittersweet feeling in leaving the long, bright summer days behind, with fewer daylight hours and smaller adventure windows. Yet there’s beauty in embracing that change, in leaning into the season for what it brings. It’s about finding joy in the transition and appreciating the fleeting moments that each season offers. Autumn gives us the chance to slow down, reflect, and prepare for the winter months ahead. It reminds us of the cycles of life and the importance of savoring every stage.

And remember there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes. So get out, wrap up warm, and enjoy these crisp, colorful autumn months! The key to truly experiencing this season is to embrace it fully. Whether it’s a long hike through the woods, a visit to a local pumpkin patch, or just a stroll through your neighborhood, take the time to appreciate the sights and sounds around you. Each adventure holds the potential for beautiful memories and inspiring photographs. And don’t forget to document your own experiences and share them, because every person’s autumn story is unique and worth telling.

If you’d like to bring a little of this season’s beauty into your own home, my gallery and online shop are full of prints that capture Ireland’s ever-changing landscapes from autumn woodlands to wild Atlantic waves. Each one is a reminder that every season has its own story to tell. Investing in local art not only enhances your space but also supports artists in your community. As you choose a piece that resonates with you, consider the story behind it. Perhaps it reminds you of a favorite place or a particular moment in time. Each print can serve as a conversation starter, inviting friends and family to engage with the beauty of the world through my lens.
